FAQ

Is egg retrieval procedure painful? What’s the process like?

2019-03-21    1466

The egg retrieval procedure itself is not painful. Conventional egg retrieval is performed under twilight sedation or general anesthesia, so you will not feel anything during the procedure. Most women return to light activity within 24 to 48 hours.

What does the process look like?

Under the guidance of transvaginal ultrasound, the doctor will guides a fine needle through the vaginal wall into each mature follicle and gently aspirates the follicular fluid containing the eggs.

The eggs are then immediately examined in the laboratory. The procedure itself takes about 5 to 10 minutes, though the actual aspiration time depend on how many follicles you have.

Some clinics estimate 15 to 30 minutes, which is a more complete estimate that includes preoperative preparations and possibly extended intraoperative time.

What about recovery?

After the sedation wears off, you may experience cramping, bloating, and mild discomfort similar to menstrual cramps. These symptoms typically improve within a few days.

You can manage discomfort afterward by doing things below:

1. Use a heating pad on your lower abdomen to ease cramping.

2. Take over-the-counter pain medication (acetaminophen, not ibuprofen or other anti-inflammatories) as recommended by your clinic

3. Stay hydrated and rest.
